Sea Service Requirements
Able Seaman - Unlimited **
1080 days of service on deck on vessels operating on the oceans or the Great Lakes.
**A mariner cannot qualify for Able Seaman without qualifying for some level of Lifeboatman or Lifeboatman/Limited.
Able Seaman - Limited **
540 days of service on deck on vessels of 100 GT or more, operating in a service not exclusively confined to rivers and smaller inland lakes of the United States.
Able Seaman - Special **
360 days of service on deck on vessels operating on the oceans or the navigable waters of the United States including the Great Lakes.
Able Seaman - Offshore Supply Vessels
180 days of service on deck on vessels operating on the oceans or the navigable waters of the United States including the Great Lakes.
Able Seaman - Sail
180 days of service on deck on sail or auxiliary sail vessels operating on the oceans or the navigable waters of the United States including the Great Lakes.

1 The elements are: |
1. Lifeboatman written exam
2. Survival craft written exam
3. Lifeboat demonstrations
4. Rescue craft demonstrations
5. First aid element of basic safety training (BST)
6. Personal survival techniques element of BST

2 Sea service must have been on lifeboat-equipped vessels engaged on voyages on any of the following routes: oceans, near coastal, Great Lakes, lakes, bays, or sounds.
3 Limited means limited to service on vessels not equipped with lifeboats. An applicant for a lifeboatman qualification limited to service on non-lifeboat equipped vessels must complete sea service on vessels engaged on voyages on any of the following routes: oceans, near coastal, Great Lakes, lake, bays, or sounds
|*New England Maritime’s USCG Approved Able Seaman (8-Day) course meets Lifeboatman Limited/PSC when combined with New England Maritime’s STCW 5-Day Basic Safety Training Course, and the Lifeboatman Limited Non-STCW and Inland when combined with New England Maritime’s Elementary First Aid and Personal Survival components of Basic Safety Training. STCW Endorsement Requirements for Able Seaman
Able Seaman or Rating Forming Part of Navigational Watch (RFPNW)

|Must meet U.S. Regulations for Sea Service, 46 CFR 12.05 |
|Must meet requirements for “Proficiency in Survival Craft” by completing an approved course or completing the assessments listed in Policy Letter 08-01 (will be required to pass PSC exam if doing assessments and completion of Basic Safety Training-Personal survival Techniques.)
|Must complete a CG Approved course for AB or complete CG Exams
|May be issued MMD with AB rating. To qualify for STCW-95 see RFPNW Requirements ||
|Applicant for RFPNW with AB or with entry level ratings |
|Must meet Policy Letter 14-02 which requires approved sea going service and/or course. Sea going service must be on Oceans (Beyond Boundary Line) with 180 days under supervision of OICNW or RFPNW holder. (Half of which must be on vessels over 200 GRT with all steering assessments completed on vessels over 100 GRT). |

Able Seaman Lifeboatman Limited
Proficiency in Survival Craft restricted 8-Day Course
Students successfully completing New England Maritime’s 65 1/4 hour (8-day) Able Seaman course will satisfy the:
1. written examination requirements for any Able Seaman endorsement; AND
2. written “Survival Craft” examination requirements for any endorsement as Able Seaman restricted to vessels without lifeboats; AND
3. practical “Survival Craft” examination requirements for any endorsement as Able Seaman restricted to vessels without lifeboats; AND
4. training requirements of the STCW Code restricted to service on vessels that are not equipped with lifeboats provided that they have also satisfied the requirements for Personal Survival Techniques and Elementary First Aid (courses available at New England Maritime STCW Basic Safety Training); AND
5. practical (knot-tying) examination requirements for any Able Seaman endorsement.

| Cancellation Policy: Deposits are refundable if written cancellation is received more than 14 days prior to course start date, less an administration fee of $100.00 and the cost of any books. Cancellations made 14 days or less from the course date will forfeit full deposit and cost of any books. A student requesting a move to a future class will be assessed a $100 fee and cancellation policy will remain in effect as of original class date. A full refund if class size minimum is not met.
