USCG Approved Limited Master (Launch Tender) License

The Limited Master license may be issued to applicants to be employed by a marina, yacht club, formal camp or educational institution allowing the licensed person to operate an inspected launch in a limited area.

Inspected launches will have a Certificate of Inspection (COI) stating number of passengers (usually more than 6) and area of operation.

Uninspected launches carry 6 or less passengers and only require the OUPV Limited License.

Eligibility Requirements for Limited Master (Launch Tender)

Age: 18 years old
Sea Experience
Limited Master Inland
  • 120 days* experience in the operation of vessels
  • 90 days of the 120 must be within the last 3 years
* A "day of sea service" is equal to 4 to 8 hours away from the dock

Eligibility Requirements for Limited OUPV (Launch Tender).

Age: 17 years old
Sea Experience
Limited OUPV Inland (limits operation to uninspected launches-6 or less passengers)
  • 90 days* experience in the operation of vessels
  • 90 days of the 90 must be within the last 3 years
* A "day of sea service" is equal to 4 to 8 hours away from the dock.
Letter of Intent to Hire

USCG Approved Limited Master (Launch Tender) Course.

Course Attendance: 100% required
Testing: All testing is done with New England Maritime. You DO NOT test with the Coast Guard.
Certification: Upon successful completion (attendance and passing required exams), you will receive a New England Maritime Certificate of Training and a Boating Safety Certificate. The Limited Master Certificate (expires one year from date issued) and the Boating Safety Certificate are then brought to the U.S. Coast Guard REC in Boston, along with your USCG Application to receive your USCG License.

Launch Tender Course Dates


2-DAY-Course meets all day Saturday and Sunday.
Course includes books, instruction, exams, and assistance with USCG Application.

Proctored exam must be scheduled, by appointment, in South Dennis and completed within 45 days of final class date. If you do not complete exams within the 45-day period, you must retake class at a fee of $289.
